Other Eye Disorders

TriCounty Eye Institute offers treatment for myopia (nearsightedness) to residents of Corona, Riverside, the Inland Empire, and Orange County.

Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Myopia, or nearsightedness, simply means that you are able to see objects up close clearly while those in the distance are blurry. This occurs because light rays entering the eye do not focus correctly, usually due to the cornea (the clear layer of tissue at the front of the eye) being too curved or the eye itself being elongated.

Nearsightedness is a very common vision condition affecting nearly 30 percent of the U.S. population and is often inherited from our parents or grandparents. Generally, nearsightedness first occurs in school-age children.

As the eye continues to grow throughout childhood, myopia typically progresses until about age 20 and then stabilizes. Environmental influences, near work, and health issues are also thought to play a role in the development of myopia later in life.

Myopia Treatment

The degree of myopia present is detected through a comprehensive eye examination. Depending on your age, glasses or contact lenses may be prescribed to correct your vision. Another option might be a procedure such as LASIK or one of the other many refractive procedures available at TriCounty Eye Institute.

LASIK is accomplished by using a highly focused laser beam to reshape the cornea, or the front surface of the eye. Patients who are more severely nearsighted can be treated with today’s advanced intraocular lenses, or IOLs as they are commonly called.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is caused by asymmetric curvature of the cornea. Instead of being round like a marble, the corneal curvature is shaped like a football. Light is not sharply focused at any distance. Since the eye has two focal points, astigmatism most commonly occurs in either nearsightedness or farsightedness. Mixed astigmatism is an unusual type of astigmatism. In this case, one focal point is near and the other far.

Astigmatism is a very common condition, and, in fact, most people have it to some degree. While slight amounts do not usually affect vision, larger amounts can cause distorted or blurred vision and may cause discomfort.

Astigmatism Treatment

The amount of astigmatism can be detected through a comprehensive eye exam at TriCounty Eye Institute, where Dr. Mark Schneider, one of the most experienced laser vision correction specialists in the country, can determine the best course of treatment, whether it be eyeglasses, contact lenses, or other appropriate methods.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia occurs when the lens of the eye loses its flexibility, making it difficult to focus up close. Typically, we first notice presbyopia when we begin having difficulty seeing up close to read. Presbyopia is part of the aging process and typically begins to affect our vision between the ages of 40 and 50. Common signs of presbyopia include a tendency to hold your reading materials farther away from you to see them, eye fatigue, and headaches.

Presbyopia is a very common condition in the United States, affecting as many as a billion people across the world as of 2005. Of these, about 517 million did not have adequate correction with eyeglasses.

Common Symptoms

Some of the common symptoms of presbyopia are:

Presbyopia Treatment

The degree of presbyopia is detected through a comprehensive eye examination at TriCounty Eye Institute and reading glasses or contact lenses can be prescribed to correct your vision. If you wear contact lenses, Dr. Mark Schneider can prescribe reading glasses that you wear while your contacts are in or you can purchase readers over-the-counter at a retail store.

Dr. Schneider also may recommend multifocal contact lenses, which are available in gas permeable or soft lens materials.

Monovision LASIK performed by Dr. Schneider is also possible treatment for presbyopia. This involves reshaping the dominant eye for distance vision and the non-dominant eye for close vision.

Conjunctivitis or Pink Eye

Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, clear tissue that lies over the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid. A number of factors can cause pink eye, including viruses, bacteria, irritants, and allergies. Pink eye that is caused by bacteria and viruses can be contagious but is not serious if diagnosed and treated quickly.

There are several different types of conjunctivitis:

Conjunctivitis caused by viruses and bacteria can be contagious but is not usually serious if diagnosed and treated quickly. Conjunctivitis in a newborn, however, should be reported to TriCounty Eye Institute immediately.

Conjunctivitis Prevention

There are a number of ways that conjunctivitis can be prevented, including the following:

If your child has conjunctivitis, it may be wise to keep him or her home from school until the symptoms have resolved.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Conjunctivitis

Call TriCounty Eye Institute if you have any of the following symptoms and if they last longer than three days:

The diagnosis can be confirmed by a thorough eye examination at TriCounty Eye Institute, where Dr. Mark Schneider can examine the symptoms and may use a cotton swab to take a sample of the eye’s fluid to be analyzed in a lab. Upon determination of the cause of the condition, Dr. Schneider can provide the best course of treatment.

Conjunctivitis caused by allergies may respond well to allergy treatment, or it could resolve itself when you avoid the appropriate allergens. Cool compresses could help you find relief in the meantime.

Eye drops may be effective for conjunctivitis caused by bacteria, and viral conjunctivitis will usually disappear on its own. To aid discomfort, apply warm compresses on the eyes.
